Guess it's from the gas leak Alien and I discovered last night. The gas company sent a man out, who shut off the gas at the leak (the water heater). So it was safe to stay here overnight, but it sure made for a jumpy night for me. Yeah, I get paranoid like that sometimes.
I'm still waiting for a call-back from someone telling me if he can fit me in for a repair today. I'm beginning to doubt it, as it's already after noon. Next I call Mom to see if she's got anyone she knows of (besides Brother Deere) that can do the job. And it figures that Brother Deere is almost 300 miles away, snowmobiling this weekend. It'll be Monday before he's home!!

So, I don't know if you saw my status update on facebook last night ... about The Rusty Knight not only cooked dinner for us, but washed all the dishes and pots and pans. He gets bored easy and actually enjoys cleaning, lol, so he washed the kitchen floor for me out of boredom ... scrubbed down to the corners.
He did say a few times to me "If we lived here, Mom, this house would be clean, clean, clean."
Nice try Rusty ... I do appreciate the help, but it's not going to work!! You're not going to clean your way into moving into my empty nest.

So, today, Paranoid me will continue to work on the kitchen ... with the doors open just enough to let fresh air in, in the event there's any sort of gas build-up in the house.
Have I ever said that I HATE gas? I've always been sort of scared of it ... and really would prefer an all electric house. Sure, no hot water during a power failure (and heat goes off anyway because of the electric fan in the gas furnace) ... no biggie. I could live with that. Gas just scares me!! I mean, you never hear of an electrical leak, do you?
If the gas to the water heater is shut off and that was what was leaking, you are fine. And when you think about it - water and ELECTRICITY are what are really dangerous - you are better off with gas...try to think of if that way. If there is gas in the house you'll smell it long before enough accumulates to cause a problem. I'm glad you are standing your ground on the empty nest - I really do think it would be a bad idea to have them move in.
ReplyDeleteI opened the windows in the utility room just enough to provide some nice cross-ventilation just in case there's a small leak until Monday when Brother Deere can get here. The guy who used to do repairs (DILs father) isn't even answering his phone anymore. Guess he doesn't want the money for repairs around here anymore? So ... it's' Brother Deere who will do it. Like I said, windows cracked open just in case. LOL. True enough that water and electricity don't mix, but I still don't like gas! Not even in those little propane bottles!!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm standing my ground for sure!! Rusty Armor seems to think he's the expert on everything ... and it grows old quickly. We were discussing my front door yesterday and he says he can fix it. The way he thinks, it would actually cause more problems than it would fix. No thanks. Sure, having a live-in housekeeper would be nice ... BUT, not at what it would cost me. My sanity!! I love my grandbabies, but there's no way I could do a 2 and 3 year old on more than a come-to-visit-gramma-for-a-few-hours basis.
Is Rusty Knight working? I don't recall what you'd said....but if not, it sounds like he'd do well running a home cleaning service - little to no startup costs and it can be done on a cash basis - not everyone wants to pay for a bonded company to do that sort of work. And good luck with your gas. If the gas company only turned it off at the heater, then they are reasonably sure that's where the leak is - otherwise they would have insisted on turning it off at the main. (I'm assuming you have gas heat as well). Electric is a LOT more expensive.

ReplyDeleteGas is fixed!! See next blog for details, LOL! Yes, I have gas heat. The Gas guy did a thorough investigation ... only found the one leak. Said my 30+ year old furnace is fine for now, but it should be replaced within the next few years for sure, if for no other reason than efficiency.
I have heard that electric is more expensive ... so I'll just have to cope. It doesn't help my gas-paranoia with about a half dozen building explosions (old gas lines) in the metro Detroit area in the last two years ... one just a few blocks from where a child-hood friend lives.
Barely after I posted my last comment,Rusty Knight called. I told him about your suggestion, Em ... he likes the idea very much, but said that right now he can't afford the start up supplies needed. He then asked if I wanted to join him in a "family business", of course that would mean me fronting the supplies. LOL. Told him I'd consider it ... but ONE family business is enough for this Momma. Really!
