Sunday

Married Son and DIL found a nice little house to rent. They started moving in today. I went over to get the tour of the new place. It's adorable!! It's the prefect starter home!! I'm sooooo happy for them. This is their first place. No more living with parents - either her parents or with me.

It's a two bedroom ranch. Full finished basement. One of the things I love about the house is it's got a fully fenced in backyard. Perfect for Grandson to play in! Lots and lots of shade trees, too!

It'll be Wednesday before they can physically live in the house, though. Seems that the house had been unoccupied for almost a year. The owner turned the water off at both the curb and at the house. When he went to turn it back on Friday the valve in the basement burst as soon as he turned the water on! Water was everywhere! It'll be Wednesday before the plumber can come out to fix it. It'll give them time for moving everything in and have it all set up. They're hoping the basement is dry by next week so they can use it.

A nice organized move. LOL.

And on Wednesday they pick up the two older kittens. Missy Shamira and Shiloh finally have a new home to go to!!

Of course, the place was *trashed*, LOL. Boxes everywhere! The only picture I was allowed to take was of the front of the house. See all the boxes? Twenty of them to be exact, LOL ... that's how many Son and his Brother-in-Law got unpacked today while DIL worked. Many many more to go. That blue thing is his trailer gate.

3 oz Box strawberry jello

Spoon alternating layers of crushed ice and gelatin pieces into tall glasses, filling them about 2″ away from tops. Slowly pour soda into each glass until full, then stir gently. Serve retch with ice tea spoons, so your guests can get at every chilly glob.

Friday Nite Fireworks Fun ...

Married Son and Grandson came over yesterday to mow the lawn. Afterwards we had a nice barbecue and lit off fireworks. Grandson was a hoot ... "Oh oh, there goes the driveway" or "Oh oh there goes Uncle's van". He loved the poppers and the sparklers. Wasn't too thrilled with anything that had a boom, whistle or lots of snap crackle and pop to them. He was better once I turned my camera over to him and let him record the fireworks. Funny how fearless he is when he gets to take pictures or record with Grandma's camera!

I took a bunch of photos ... enjoy. I know we enjoyed the evening!!

Grandson stomping on "poppers". He found it worked better than throwing them to the ground. He had quite a little dance going there.

Married Son running when Single Son threw a firecracker-like thing at him. Boys, they *never* grow up!

One of the smaller fireworks in the package Single Son bought. Of course they couldn't wait until dark so they lit off a half dozen or so of the smaller things.

For some reason I couldn't get the whole video to upload. But at least you can hear Grandson in the background saying "There goes the drive-waaaaaay". It was just too cute!

The child you hear in the background is my grandson. He's saying "there goes the driveway". LOL!

I've Done That!!!

I got this from my friend, angiedizme's, page and thought it was fun and different!

- Post 3 things you've done in your lifetime that you don't think anybody on your friends list has done.
- See if anybody else responds with "I've done that."
- Have your friends cut & paste this onto their page to see what unique things they've done in their life.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) Exie Poo and I spent a week in Dallas as Ross Perot's guest. Luxury hotel accommodations, fine dining, visiting all sorts of sites of local interest. We were guests at Ross' ranch in Plano, TX for a barbecue he hosted. So did 99 other couples, too. It was Ross' way of thanking his Top 100 employees of EDS back in the early 80s.
2) Last day of driver's ed I rear-ended a cop! Yes, rear-ended a cop!! Back when the driver's ed cars had the panic brake on the passenger side of the car so the instructor could hit the brakes if needed. I got my driving permit that day - the cop had checked out the vehicle, found the brake was at fault (and not ME at fault) and I was issued my permit. I was so scared to drive after that it would be a year and a half before I would finally get my license!
3) I dated Santa Claus. Well, not exactly, but he was a Santa look alike. Everywhere we went kiddies stopped and stared. The most outgoing ones would come up and ask if he was Santa and then want to tell him their wish lists.
Gripe about your neighbor on RottenNeighbor.com
(Personal note: Having an inconsiderate neighbor who never brings his Barky dog in the house at night so others can sleep I thought this was a great idea! Maybe this will work where nothing else has!)
Detroit Free Press
Gripe about your neighbor on RottenNeighbor.com
COLUMBUS, Ohio-- Just outside his sealed bedroom window, beyond the chain-link fence that surrounds his next-door neighbor's yard, sit the reasons David Adams says he can't sleep: two bushy-tailed dogs that bark and howl all night.
Advertisement
The Magnolia, Miss., resident plugged up his ears and even took his neighbor to court alleging a noise violation. But the barking went on. Finally he discovered a Web site seemingly tailor-made for such suburban woes: www.RottenNeighbor.com.
"Nothing seemed to work. I couldn't get any help from the city," Adams said. "So I figured, let's try public humiliation."
He posted a video of the troublesome pooches on the site, and other users chimed in on his plight. Some offered sympathy and methods of silencing the mutts. Others berated him for blaming the animals.
The site founded last July is part online therapy, part trashy paperback novel. It singles out neighbors for offenses ranging from shoddy lawn upkeep ("They have garbage all through their yard") to alleged violence ("He has tried to run us down with his push lawnmower").
"It's kind of like watching a train wreck," admits 51-year-old Maegan Polak, of Flossmoor, Ill. "You know you shouldn't be enjoying it, but you are."
Users are invited to post advice on dealing with neighbors who fight and yell, who let their animals defecate on other people's property, who neglect their septic tanks — even those who cook foul-smelling food.
The site shows how neighborhoods are changing, said Polak, a figure skating instructor who visits RottenNeighbor.com occasionally.
"Most people don't go knocking on the doors of future neighborhoods like they used to," she said. "We always knew who was moving in and how many kids they had, all that stuff. People were a little more outgoing. Now they just don't seem to care."
Using Google Maps, the site zooms in on homes of the accused, represented by structures colored red (for the rotten) and green (for the good) that resemble plastic pieces of a Monopoly board game.
Type in Columbus, Ohio, for instance, and the site brings up a bird's-eye view of the city, a patchwork of trees and rooftops. Click on one of the houses to see comments from agitated residents, like this one from Runaway Bay Drive complaining about a neighbor who "stomps around at all hours of the day."
"He puts his cigarette butts and packages on my patio," the anonymous user writes without posting the address of the man in question. "He also puts his beer cans and spills beer all over my grill."
Most of the postings are anonymous, which is just fine with site co-founder Brant Walker, 27, who came up with the idea when he moved into a new apartment and noticed a rotten smell coming from his neighbor's door.
Walker, a Web site designer from San Diego, said the site averages several hundred thousand hits per day. He said it is a good resource for people moving to a new neighborhood because it offers a glimpse behind closed doors — "things that a real estate agent won't tell you."
But he admits the site was forced to add a "flag for removal" option after people complained that they were unfairly targeted as bad neighbors. If a post gets flagged a certain number of times, it is now removed.
Polak believes the online chatter sometimes veers out of control, and she once posted a comment suggesting the site hire a moderator. Someone erased her remark.
The relative freedom of anonymity presents dangers, including a lack of accountability, said Mary Madden, a senior research specialist at the Pew Internet & American Life Project who studies privacy issues.
"It can embolden some users to post negative or inflammatory comments that may be true. But it can also inspire others who might be trying to sell their house or increase their property value to post positive reviews," Madden said.
Positive comments can also be found, such as the "Best neighbors ever" posting from Medford, Mass.: "Lived next to these guys for years. Top notch neighbors and excellent parents to boot."
But red houses dominate, especially since Walker added a new feature: Posts showing the homes of registered sex offenders.
Site co-founder Thomas Adams — no relation to David Adams — said RottenNeighbor.com is pitching ideas to major networks for a reality show based on the site.
"The goal would be to find a way to reconcile neighbors' differences," Adams said. "We're trying to showcase the beautiful side of what neighbors can be like when they help each other."
Walker said the site has received numerous e-mails from users who asked to have postings removed because they resolved their conflicts, but he declined to cite an example. He said the postings were removed.
Still, the Web site's name suggests it's not marketed toward good Samaritans who are trying to help their neighbors, said Jonathan Zittrain, a Harvard Law School professor and author of "The Future of the Internet — And How to Stop It."
"It doesn't seem to me like, in that sense, it's a serious venture," Zittrain said. "It's already, to me, marketing itself as a tabloid venture."
The dogs are still barking on Regan Drive in Magnolia, but David Adams said the whirring of several box fans in his bedroom has helped drown out the noise.
He has not taken the advice of fellow RottenNeighbor.com users who suggested he buy his neighbor a gift certificate for dog training classes or put peanut butter laced with sedatives over the fence.
Adams' neighbor could not be reached for comment. The phone number listed at the home was disconnected, and no other listing could be found.
Adams has contemplated selling his house but acknowledges he would first have to take his complaint off the site.
"If anybody's looking to buy my house, then that would be awful if they check it out," he said.
Friday Five ...
A big thanks to JIMMY for suggesting this week's topic: our five favorite sports figures.  For those of you who don't follow sports, surely there are five you've seen on TV that seem pretty interesting in some way or another  (hopefully for good things and not court cases....lol).  Anyway, as usual, post your blogs to your own site, linking back to this one, and place a link to your blog below.
Happy FIVING!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1) Gordie Howe. Mr Hockey. Growing up in hockey arenas where my brothers both played, he's a natural choice as my #1 Favorite Sports Figure. In the 70s he hosted many hockey workshops and played in many an "Old-Timers" games. What a pleasure it was to see this great man on the ice with pint sized hockey players in an Old-Timer's vs. "Kids" game.

2) Steve Yzerman. Played for the Detroit Red Wings for his entire professional hockey career.

3) Vlad Konstantinow. Detroit Red Wings. Perminently disabled in a limo accident after Detroit won the Stanley Cup in 1997. He's still a much loved part of Red Wing hockey.

4) While not a professional sports figure by any stretch, I cannot go without remembering my brother, Richard. He started playing hockey at the young age of six. He played football for his High School team, baseball, BMX racing and was an avid body builder. His untimely death at the age of 25 was a shock to all who knew and loved him. Fifteen years later he's still remembered for his athletic abilities.

5) Not a specific person, but all the men and women that volunteer their time, resources and knowledge to youth sports programs. Without them many children would never have the opportunity to participate in sports - or become our sports heroes of tomorrow.

The Misadventure Continues ...

Went to Best Buy early this morning to pick up the digital converter box that was supposed to arrive at the store overnight.

Notice I say supposed ...

The shipment didn't show up. Or more appropriately the shipment showed up *minus* digital converter boxes.

Figures.

It's frustrating. Talk about supply not meeting demand. Geesh. I'm just glad I didn't wait until the last minute. Can you imagine the shortage that'll happen in the last months of this mandatory change-over?

I just hope I find a box (let alone the three or four total I need) before these coupons expire. And the rate I'm going, it'll take me two months or more to succeed in this mission.

Mission: Impossible.

The Misadventures Of A Harried Shopper

No, that's not hairy shopper!

I decided today would be a good day to go buy my digital converter boxes. That should have been my first clue that the day would be a frustrating one - me *wanting* to go shopping!! That never happens. I H.A.T.E. shopping!

Knowing what shopping does for my mood I decided to call around first to find what the stores had in stock as far as digital converter boxes go. I have my mind set on an RCA box ... they have the best reviews from consumers over the other products of similar prices. Anyway ... first store I called they were out. Second store - same story. Tenth store, the same. Grrrrrr!! I'm not sure how many stores I ended up calling, but I didn't think I left out any local stores. Finally I broke down and called Sears. They said they had five in stock! Yippee!! It was literally a two minute drive, so over to Sears I head. Nope, they don't have any either. The clerk had no idea why I was told they had five in stock. Personally I think they were holding inventory for others. And it's not the first time I've called Sears to be told an item is in stock only to get there to be told they're out. And I was not going to drive around to other Sears stores to find my item again! Not at $4 a gallon for gas!! Grrrrrrr.

I leave, frustrated and getting a little mad that Sears did it to me again. Wondering if I'll ever find a damned converter box before my coupons expire. There across the Maul parking lot I spy *Best Buy*. How could I have forgotten they were there? Soooooo ... over I head. The nicest salesman I've seen in ages greeted me with "How are you today, Ma'am". "How I feel depends on if you say 'yes' to my question". I asked if they had any converter boxes in stock. The look on his face was priceless. "Sorry, we don't. But before you hate me, we are getting a large shipment in tonight. Let me see how many boxes we are expecting to come in." And off he went to check the computer. "Ma'am, I have about a hundred of them coming in. I will be more than happy to hide one - I mean - hold one for you until tomorrow when you can come in". OMG!! I'm in love with this salesman! LOL!

He did say that because of demand the store is limiting converter box purchases to one per customer. So hopefully tomorrow I'll have at least one converter box. I'm seriously thinking of dragging both of my sons with me, each with a coupon in hand, so we can get three of them. Mybad. LOL!

And then I wonder what caused me to hate shopping as much as I do ...

Ten Thoughts Tuesday ...

1) And here I had been, just contemplating the fact that nothing - and I mean *nothing* -  interesting has happened since last Tuesday for me to blog (let alone ten thoughts!) when the phone rings just after midnight ...

2) It's Single Son calling to apologize for not responding to a text message I left him Monday evening. He said he couldn't get to it, as he was in the Emergency Room. Excuse ME?? Talk to me boy!! Long story made short, he was in a car accident with the company vehicle. Not his fault. Some woman side-swiped him as he was bringing a co-worker back from the ER for an earlier accident she had at work. He's okay, the co-worker is a bit banged up from *two* accidents she'd been in yesterday ... the driver responsible for the accident is okay, as is her passenger. Her car is totalled, the company truck Son was driving was moderately damaged.

3) I just gotta stop thinking that *nothing* is going on. Every time I acknowledge that it's been dull around here, something happens. I'm just glad no one was hurt.

4) In other news ... I'm almost afraid to say there is no other news. It's been rather uneventful around here lately. Excepting for Barky Dog going at it most nights until someone informs the dopey neighbor it's time to bring Barky in for the night and a few squirrel incidents it's been quiet around here.

5) Just found out I won't be able to reserve a seat at the park for the Village Fireworks. They fall on July 4th this year, the same day as Dad's birthday. There's no way I can make it from Dad's party then find parking in the Village for the Fireworks in time. I'll end up pulling somewhere off the side of the road, and hoping for a good enough spot to see the fireworks. Sorry Amber ... I was so hoping to have front row seats so I could take pictures for you this year!!  They always have the fireworks on the Friday closest to the Fourth. Figures the year I actually promised pictures for someone is the year I have problems. Funny thing is, Single Son said the Chief wants someone to take pictures of the Fair and fireworks for a new website they're creating. I lost my chance to be the photographer.

6) Oh well, family takes priority! My Dad's health isn't the best. Never know if this is the last birthday we may have with him. The Village Fair and fireworks will always be there. Daddy won't.

7) LOL! Single Son just got home or so I thought (come to find out he snuck in the house about half hour ago, LOL). Comes into my room to talk to me. He's fine. He said, though, that something was wrong with the one cat, Ringo, that I better go check out. I go to investigate only to find Ringo sitting outside my door, looking mad as hell. Seems Single Son decided it'd be fun to torment the cat with some tin foil around his tail. Poor Kitty!!

8) Alien is now on summer visitations with her Dad. She's with me a week, him a week. This is his week. It's quiet around here. Should I mention that? Probably not. Damned Gremlin will probably add some more excitement to my life now.

9) Well, the car is acting weird again. Not sure what it's doing ... other than the engine races whenever it wants. Driving to see my lawyer the other day it was like the cruise control was on and I coasted along merrily at 70 miles an hour. Only problem was I hadn't set the cruise control! I mentioned it to my lawyer, who's a weekend mechanic and he thinks it's the fuel injection. Just dandy. All I need is another problem with that car.

10) Wow, for someone who didn't think I had ten thoughts this week, I didn't do too bad, LOL. Off to watch some vintage "Lost In Space" episodes on www.hulu.com.

Friday Five

For this weeks Friday Five, I thought that now Summer is in full swing, we could share some of our summer time memories...good or bad!

1.  A summer I'll never forget ... The summer my ex had a contract to tear down the old beach house at the subdivision's private beach. My sons were little and we were able to enjoy the beach all summer long without having to pay the annual dues (since their daddy was excavating the beach house).

2.  As a kid, every summer we would ... When not swimming in our pool we spent a lot of the summer at my Grandmother's cottage.

3.  A summer that I regret ... I have no regrets.

4.  I loved summers as a child because ... they were carefree and uncomplicated.

5.  During the summer I enjoy ... driving to Port Huron, Michigan for a day of picnicking, ship watching and visiting the Port Huron Lightship on the St. Clair River.

Owie!

How do you pronounce the word "envelope"?

I say "en-velope"

 3

I say "on-velope"

 3

I say it either way.

 0

Who cares as long as it contains a check for me!

 4

Alien and I were bagging the garbage from the can in the kitchen when the trash can flew out of her hands and landed on my baby toe! Ow!! Don't think it's broken, but it sure hurts. Swelled up, skin broken at the point of impact.

Kids, what can I say? LOL. No, it won't get her out of helping me in the future. I'll just be sure to wear steal-toed boots next time.

I keep saying "ow", she keeps saying "ha ha". Brat!!

My kids are weird. But we all knew that! LOL.

The other night at about 11 PM Single Son and his GF come into my bedroom, each with a beer in their hands. "Momma, whatcha doing?" Great he calls me "momma" I know he wants something. "I don't know what am I doing", I ask. "Driving us up to Taco Bell, we're too drunk to drive ourselves". So that's what I did. Drove 'em up to Taco Bell after 11 PM. Geesh.

Speaking of Single Son, he and I have this on-going argument. It concerns the word "ENVELOPE". He says "en-velope", I say "on-velope". It came to heads today when I told him he had an "on-velope" in the mail he'd been waiting for. He corrects me everytime I say it, he has for years. We've looked it up in the dictionary and of course they have both pronounciations. Nothing has solved this argument. Yes, he even goes nuts when he hears "on-velope" on television.

Not a lot else going on here tonight. Can't do much when I can barely walk thanks got a UFGC ... Unidentified Flying Garbage Can.

Ten Thoughts Tuesday ...

1) The gremlin has hit the phone lines! Months ago I had the phone company remove all but the very basic service off my phone - 50 calls a month, no other services except my beloved internet, lol. Don't need much, as we all have cell phones and mostly use them anyway. But ... my "voice mail" light starts blinking for absolutely no reason. I don't have voice mail on the home phone anymore! It's been driving me nuts!

2) I finally broke down and signed up for the discount cards for the Analog to Digital TV change. Got them the other day. Found out Single Son had also signed up for it, but with a limit of two per household he won't be getting his, LOL. I gave him one of mine. Guess we'll just have to pay full price for the other two boxes that we need. Or ... *if* I can talk Mom into signing up and then taking her two coupons off her hands. They have brand new digital tvs and cable. They don't need the converter boxes, LOL.

3) Now I have to go shopping. Yuck. I've been looking online and the best prices I've seen locally for the converter boxes are at WalMart. I hate that store with a passion, but if the boxes are only going to cost ten bucks each I'll venture in and out as quick as I can!!

4) Speaking of TV, I'm so addicted to www.hulu.com. They have old episodes of a lot of the shows I grew up on. Adam-12, Emergency!, The Addam's Family, McHale's Navy, and more. I've even been missing my favorite shows on TV for re-runs of the oldies. LOL.

5) I actually remembered to get the trash to the curb last night!! It's been six months or more since they moved my pick up day to Tuesdays, but I still forget! And no one else takes it upon themselves to take it to the curb. It all falls on me. Grrrrrrrr.

6) Speaking of *falling*. Married Son is supposed to come over today weather permitting and removed a bunch of small branches off the roof for me. Last time he went up on my roof he fell off! I'm half debating if I want to go outside and digitally record him up there. I'll stay on the ground, my roof climbing days are over. And yes, I'm the type that would keep recording as he's falling - gotta see if I can get that $10,000 winner for Funny Videos.

7) Had a lot of practice over the years with the kids and accidents. Some of them downright funny, some not. I learned early not to freak out over the sight of blood - unless it was all over my new carpeting. I don't panic during an event, and seldom afterwards (the exception being when Bucky attacked Single Son two years ago or Single Son's car accident in 2000). I'd be the perfect candidate to keep filming during a "hey, ya'll watch this" moment - keeping the subject within the viewfinder at all times, LOL. And heaven knows we have our share of bloopers. Yup, it's decided, *if* Married Son comes over today to clean off the roof, I'm recording it! Now for it to stop raining.

8) Oh damn. I'm out of cat food. And four pussies here to feed. Better run up to the store before it turns ugly around here. So much for staying home today. Wonder what other errands I can run while I'm out? Not a danged one. I'm all caught up on this week's errands. Crap.

Typical. Number 9 is upon me and the brain ceases up once again. Ummmmm ...

9) Wow!! It's that time of year to make my reservations for the Fourth of July Fireworks in the Village my son's a cop for. The police and fire department basically take over a lakeside park and without reservations you can't get in. Best seats in the village, too. There's a Street Fair, where they close the downtown area to traffic and have a bunch of carnival rides and games. There's a private picnic at the Police Chief's house, too. Great times! Over 120,000 came last year to the small village festivities.

Come on thought ten ... I know you're in there ...

10) Nope, no thought ten. Geesh.

Father's Day ... Part Two ...

So I stopped by the condo to pick up the folks and then we went to Brother Deere's house for Father's Day dinner. Had a good time. Mom was civil, then again she usually is when Brother Deere is around. We even laughed and joked around quite a bit.

This is my Dad. He's waiting for me to put down my camera so he can dig into his cake.

This was my dinner ... look at the size of those scallops!! A whole pound of scallops, just for me. LOL. The rest of the family dined on roast beef. Long story on why I got seafood and not roast, LOL. But I'm glad I had the scallops. It was the best meal I've had since ... well, since the last time Brother Deer cooked.

Brother Deere started hinting that after he cleaned up he was going to have a cold beer and then head off to bed. Our clue that he wanted us to leave. Perfect timing, too, as we could see storm clouds rolling in off in the distance. I dropped my folks off at the condo and headed home. The weather held off until I got home.

As I was getting out of the car in the dark, I heard one of the neighbors call me by name. He and Married Son have been friends for 14 years. He lives alone in the house he grew up in while his mother prepares it for rental. So ... I hear "D" yelling for me to come over to the house. "I just got home", he says, "and found a tree fell on the house. I can't get ahold of my mom and I don't know what to do". So ... about all I could do was go with him into the house and check out the damages. This is the bedroom he's occupying ...

Luckily he wasn't home at the time. Had he been, I know "D" would have freaked out. Married Son just happened to text message me while I was over taking pictures of the house. I told him what was up - or more exactly what had fallen down. He came right over and helped "D" throw a tarp on the roof. Perfect timing, too, as it had started to pour. The rain didn't last long. It stopped just about the time they were done covering the huge hole. Figures, LOL.

So, that was Father's Day, 2008.

Ingredients:
2 medium Tomatoes
1 lb Ground beef
1 pk Burrito or taco seasoning
1 can (30oz) refried beans
8 Or 10 burrito size soft Flour tortillas
2 ct (8oz) guacamole
1 ct (16oz) sour cream

On top of that, spoon a strip of sour cream (fresh mucus), a strip of guacamole, beans and beef. Tightly fold the left and right sides of the tortilla over your ingredients, then tuck the lower third of the whole burrito under itself, making a nose shape. Bloggers Block

Sorry I haven't been around lately. I'm not sure why. Guess it's blogger's block. Or just nothing going on here lately. And I mean nothing, LOL. I have been keeping up with ya'll through the emails Multiply sends out. I have about thirty I'd like to respond to, but ... well, face it, the likelihood of me actually commenting is pretty slim. It's not that I don't care about ya'll ... I do ... I just can't think of anything to say. Sad when I can't think of something to say, eh?

We have more severe storms in the area. Just what we need. There's still 30,000 in the area who are without power from last Sunday's storms. Gotta love all this crazy weather. NOT! We were only a day without power, we were one of the lucky ones. The grocery store just yesterday got back it's computer system. I couldn't even buy groceries until yesterday with their EBT system being down!! And then when I got home I noticed they mis-scanned a few items. So now I have to go back (with the items) and get that resolved. I usually watch as they scan my groceries, but these completely got past me. Gotta love those scanner laws. I'll get five bucks back because they screwed up!!

Well, gonna head on out of here. It's looking like the storms are fast approaching. Maybe I can get some good storm pictures? LOL ...

Friday Five

Quoting our Friday Five moderator ... "Since this is Friday the 13th, which has been noted to be full of 'superstition', I thought I would play on that...

Superstition: old wives tale, folklore, bizarre beliefs, taboos, omens, good/bad luck.

Now, let's compare 5 superstitions that you believe in!? If you are not the superstitious type ... maybe you could name 5 of the oddest, funniest or otherwise interesting superstitions you have heard of!"

Click here for the Friday Five Multiply group.

1) When giving a knife as a gift always tape a silver coin to the blade. Not doing so will result in the relationship of the gift giver and recipient being severed.

2) Washing your car will bring rain.

3) It's bad luck to leave a house or building from a door different than the one you came in from.

4) Trim the wicks of new candles as soon as you get them. Bad luck will fall on the household if they remain untrimmed.

5) Always speak nicely of your car when you're within *hearing* range. Talking bad about it will only result in the car breaking down. Also, name your car and call it by name or "she" will feel ignored and unloved and operate badly (From my Grandmother who always talked nice about Esmerelda - the name she always gave her cars).

Ten Thoughts Tuesday ...

1) The sun is out and it's cooled off considerably today. Yeah!! I can deal with 71 degrees. It was the 90s of the last few days that really bothered me.

2) I can't believe how cooperative some of my neighbors were when that tree fell on the road on Sunday. These are people that otherwise keep to themselves. Sad when you think about it. The ones that helped out have been in this neighborhood for years - yet no one knew the other's name. At least we know *who* we can count on (and who is worthless) in the event of an emergency, eh?

3) Dad drove me nuts during that whole storm and power outage thing. He called me like every hour, draining my cell phone battery in the process, LOL. "Come out to the condo, we have electricity and A/C" or "How are you going to eat without power?" He just didn't understand that the drive out (17 miles) would have been dangerous with all of the power outages (no traffic lights). He finally told me if Mom was the reason for my decision to sit it out here at home, he made her promise to be nice - or - he said I could push her into the lake they live on.

4) Then add that Married Son was a huge pest, too, with the "come over here Mom, we have power and a basement to hide in" I was about ready to scream!! What I find funny about the whole thing is I'm 48 and am fully able to take care of myself, even in a power outage. And that's what I want to do ... sit it out at home - alone. I love to watch a good storm not hide out from it. Geesh.

5) Oh well. Things have settled down here a bit. Until the next storm anyway.

6) Both of the new kittens have already been adopted out. They're not even a week old and we've got two new homes for them! Yeah! I've given up on the idea of adopting out the Kitten Factory for now. I'm trying to talk Married Son into taking Shiloh and Missy Shamira with him when they move into a new house.

7) Yup, Married Son has decided not to move back here with me when Single Son moves out later this summer. With his line of work (salvaging and recycling) he needs a house with a garage. I don't have a garage, nor do I have room to build one (or the money to do so, LOL). And he knows there's no way I'd let him sort that stuff in my tiny backyard. So ... he and DIL have begun house-hunting. He wants to stay close to this area, so that Grandson can see both of his grandmas whenever he wants.

8) I'm getting closer to an empty nest!! Yippee! If they don't move too far away from me, I really think I can handle the empty nest. Funny how for as much as I wanted it for so long, now that it's closer I had my dreads about it. Maybe this is the solution? I will get my empty nest - well sort of empty since Alien won't be 18 for another year and a half - and still have the kids living close enough that I can handle it.

9) I finally found the lawn mower I want!! But for two grand it's going to be on my wish list for a long time. It's like one of those Room-ba vacuums - only for the grass!! How cool is that? Of course, if I did buy it, I'd also have to fence off the entire yard - I'll be darned if I'd let my expensive lawn-ba (or whatever they call it) wander over to the neighbors yard. See, I don't like either of my neighbors ... one side is Barky dog - the other side that man is worthless. Six young kids (one severely disabled), and three dogs in a three bedroom house and he won't lift a finger to help his wife - let alone a neighbor in need. Let 'em mow their own freaking lawns. LOL.

10) Can't think of another thought. Typical.

Stormy Sunday ...

Major storms blew through the area late yesterday afternoon. We lost power from about 5 PM last night until just a little bit ago. We're one of the lucky ones, there's still over 200,000 without power. I'm not anticipating having ours for long, LOL. I hear a few transformers in the area still blowing up.

The neighborhood looks pretty rough. Hearing on the news, our township was one of the heaviest hit. I wouldn't be surprised, lol. Winds yesterday kicked up to 70 MPH at the front of the storm. There's limbs down everywhere. Alien is blocked in at her father's house - there's no way in or out because of fallen trees and downed power lines. Schools were cancelled today, three days before summer vacation officially starts, too.

The worst thing to happen to our neighborhood was a downed tree that blocked the road just a few houses away. Lots of branches and limbs that fell, too. Married Son came over to help clear the road should we need to have emergency crews come in. We didn't need them, but it's nice to have the street passable again. Got some pics of the whole removal process. Married Son was in all his glory moving those heavy trees with his 4X4 truck! LOL!

I had to run (drive, really) up to the store to get a battery operated radio. I hated being cut off from the news during that whole storm and with more storms on the way I don't want to be caught short again. The store was open, but only because they had enough emergency generators to run the entire store. Most businesses are still without power and closed. It was a madhouse in Meijer's, worse than usual for those of you who shop Meijer's and know what a zoo those stores can be, LOL. I was lucky to find a AM/FM portable radio - and for under $15 no less. LOL.

Our weather is nothing like what they've had in Indiana and Southern Illinios, the weather that Amy has been blogging about lately - we were really rather lucky. Oh, Amy, your hospital made our local news today with it's having to be evacuated.

The weatherman reports more storms on the way. Me and my new little AM/FM radio are ready this time, LOL.

Hoping all of my friends that are being effected by all this weird weather are staying safe.

Survived Saturday ... Barely ...

I debated even posting this until I realized I can send it to select friends. Just one of those posts I don't want everyone to read, lol.

So, I get to my folks house an hour late yesterday. Wasn't entirely my fault. Ok, yes it was. I was proscratinating by having Married Son check out something on my car that was questionable to me. Anyway ... so I get there late. Mom's in watching QVC and no "hi" out of her, she starts whining that the QVC channel had been out for a few days. Poor thing, how did she survive without her QVC? Dad was napping when I got there, so I didn't go say hi to him immediately.

Mom and I are enjoying the a/c in their den, just chatting. Catching up - gossip sort of thing. Out of the blue her lower lip starts to quiver and she says "I pretend you're in California and I only hear from you at Christmas". WTF? Where the hell did that come from and WHY? Needless to say I start to tear up. Took me a minute or two of sitting there to compose myself enough to say to her "show me where you want the flowers so I can get them planted and get out of your hair". I grabbed my bag and went to my dad's bathroom to change into my work clothes. Daddy was awake, saw my tears and asked what happened. So I told him. I grabbed a smoke from my purse and headed outside afterwards. Mom did not follow immediately. I can pretty much assume Daddy confronted her and told her to be nice. When she did come outside to show me where the flowers were to be planted and how far apart she wanted them, she was real testy, almost violent as she bent over and put the shovel in the dirt a few times, showing me the spacing. Stabbed at the dirt is what she did. We only spoke if we needed to. "Don't use the skimpy ones, just the biggest ones." "I bought too many maybe we should re-space them?" ... that sort of thing.

After I was about half way done, she started to talk to me like nothing was wrong. Here I am still very hurt and my face still tear stained and now she's playing all nice? She never brought up her comment or apologized for it, either. I can usually forgive and forget, but that comment cut to the bone.

Planting done, I went inside to get out of the dirty work clothes and say goodbye to Daddy. He begged me to stay, to go out to dinner with them after all, it is a tradition, he said. Said what Mom said was inexcusable, but he thought I was the bigger person and could get over it.

Out to dinner we went. Applebee's. Had ... hell, I don't remember what I ate now. I was still hurt. Tilapia something or other. All through dinner Mom was more typical than I've seen her in a while. Funny, really enjoyed herself. Even teased with the waitress that I'm cheap labor - just bribe me with dinner and she can get me to do almost any chore.

Dinner over, I'm driving their van back to the condo. Mom says to go up the road a few extra miles, she wanted to show me something. We get to that intersection - btw, it's out in the middle of nowhere, there's not even a house there - she says "well we drove this far, why don't we stop in to visit your brother?" 20 Miles later there we are. She wanted to show me something upstairs in Brother Deere's bedroom  ... and once cornered there, she starts in again with the emotional burden shit. How the only way she'll be free of the burden is to turn her back on me. Told her to do what she needed to do. I'll do what I need to do, too. It was about that time I noticed a picture of my deceased brother on Brother Deere's dresser, and Mom's words of long ago "It should have been you, not him" came back to haunt me.

After our visit, we headed back to their condo. It was getting late, and I could see lightning off in the distance. The perfect excuse to head home!! Thank the Goddesses! What I don't understand is, after bitching about what a burden she thinks I am, she gives me a huge box and three full bags of groceries to take home. She brushes it off with "I buy those buy one get two free sales at Meijer and I over did it, I don't have the room for all this shit. Get it out of here for me."

The rain had started as I drove home. Tears flowing. By the time I got home the storms were pretty bad. I unloaded the car in the rain. Only put away the freezer and fridge items, the rest would wait until later. That done, I came back outside and in a downpour just sat on my front stoop and cried. Didn't even dry off when I got in the house later. Why bother? Fell asleep in front of the fan, soaking wet, and still crying.

Mom called me today. All chatty and friendly. Never an apology, like nothing was wrong. I'm still hurt, not everyday you hear your mother say shit like that. And here I thought lately that we'd been doing good in mending a lifetime of hurt between us.

Guess I'll always be the burden. The black sheep. Guess I'll never be good enough in her eyes.

If it weren't for Daddy, maybe, just maybe I'd start apartment hunting in California.

Gross Grub - TOXIC TOMATOES

Description:
Creepy Cuisine, Lucy Munroe

Ingredients:
6 medium tomatoes
1/2 Avocado --peeled, pitted and chopped
4 oz Swiss cheese -- grated
6 Fresh basil leaves -- chopped --or 1 tablespoon dried basi
1/4 tsp Dried oregano

Directions:
Wash the tomatoes and cut them in half crosswise. Place the halves - open side up - on a cookie sheet. In a small bowl, mash together the avocado (sludge), grated Swiss cheese (pus), and basil (poisonous plant matter). Spoon the mixture on top of the tomatoes and sprinkle with oregano (fly wings). Broil the tomatoes for 5 minutes, or until pus begins to ooze. Carefully remove the tomatoes from the broiler and serve hot, or allow to cool slightly and eat them with your hands (wearing plastic gloves, of course - to keep from being contaminated)!

Water or orange juice

Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It's off to Mum's I go ...

Get to spend the afternoon bonding with the folks. Fun, fun. I was actually supposed to go over yesterday but told Mom I'd be out today instead because of the headache I had yesterday. It wasn't that bad, but a day of "bonding" it'd have been much worse by the end of the day, lol. See, Mom is big time Nag-ger. A regular Maxine. I love her to death, she's my mom, but there's certain times I know I can't take it - like when I already have a headache.

And I'm going over there to plant flowers for her. Which means she'll be standing over me, in the heat, telling me "you're doing it wrong". LOL. Thankfully, it's a tiny garden so I'll only have to endure about half an hour of that! She'll probably have other chores for me to do while I'm there, she usually does. "Climb the ladder and take those curtains down for me" or "I need you to help me sort through a box of something or other" or "Go look at Daddy's computer, it's acting strange again". Then we'll go out to dinner. At least if we stick to the normal routine we will, LOL. It's my reward from Daddy for surviving Mom's chore list.

I'm sitting here thinking that it's funny how as we age we need help with the things we used to be able to do. I can't do the lawn anymore, or even take the garbage out because of all the surgeries I've had - I can't lift more than 25 pounds without feeling severe abdominal pain and can't do anything too strenuous either (like pushing a lawn mower, LOL). I've had to rely on my kids for a few years to do what I can't anymore. Yet it seems so odd to hear my mom say "you have to do this for me, I'm too old to be doing it". Thankfully she's got my brother to do what I can't ... LOL.

Hoping ya'll are enjoying your Saturday! I know I'll be grateful when mine is over. LOL!

Friday Five

Been a while since I've done a Friday Five. No excuses ...

To quote our Friday Five Moderator: "Hi folks!  Today's topic shall be Five Favorite Modes of Childhood Entertainment!  Originally, I was going to suggest Five Favorite TV Shows from Childhood, but then I remembered perhaps not everyone was as sedentary a child as I was.  So, if you have five favorite TV shows (like I do), then feel free to use those.  Otherwise, feel free to expand to other forms of entertainment."

So without further adieu ... My Five Favorite Modes of Childhood Entertainment ... and since it's nearly summer and so hot out, I'm going to concentrate on my Favorite SUMMER activities.

1) Swimming in the pool in our backyard. From sun-up to after sun-down ... regular fish we were!

2) Bike riding. On cool days my best friend and I would take off for a day of bike riding in our huge subdivision. We'd usually come home for meals, then head out again until night fall.

3) "Camping" in the heavily wooded part of our backyard. We had a clearing for a tent and a fire pit on the more than half acre woods. We were even allowed to have small bonfires. Ah, nothing better than s'mores on a chilly summer's eve!

4) Going to our summer cottage on Houghton Lake (Michigan). Lazy summer days spent at the beach, or sailing the lake. Going into Prudenville and going through all the little antique shops my mother loved so much (and where my antique addiction began). Miniature Golf. Go-carts.

5) Cuddling up on the couch on Saturdays with my little brother and watching "The Sir Graves Ghastly Show". I still love those "B" horror and cheesy monster movies of days gone by!

Kitties Update ...

There's only two kittens. Yippee!

Poor Alien had to sleep in the same room with them. She's usually a sound sleeper, but every sound she heard last night had her jumping up to check on the new babies. See, we can't close the door since Ros needs to get to the litter boxes (Alien brought food and water up to her room for Ros) ... so the other cats kept sneaking into Alien's room last night trying to check out the new babies. Ros wouldn't hear of it and kept letting out warning growls. The other cats finally gave up, but they all stayed in Alien's room and slept with Alien.

She's got a way with animals, that child does. And not just our pets, but any animal. Totally opposite Single Son and his bad luck with the animal kingdom, that's for sure!!

I haven't tried to get close to the kitties yet. I doubt Ros would let me. Alien, however, was allowed to check on them. She only saw one clearly enough, said it looks like a dalmatian, mostly white with a few tiger stripe *spots* on it. Said it's the ugliest kitten she's ever seen, LOL! I told her "now, remember they were just born, it'll take a while for them to register on the cute-ometer. Besides, you weren't that cute as a newborn yourself but look at you now!! " LOL. Yup, remember my philosophy ... "If your kids don't end up in therapy as adults you're raising 'em wrong".

Before leaving for school today Alien woke me up with "instructions" for the day. Check on the kittens frequently and to keep the others away. Riiiiiight. I'm going back to bed!! I barely slept last night. Ros will keep the others away just fine, trust me! Gotta laugh, though, it was cute. She's a hovering kitty-gramma, she is!!

Tonight is Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. I'm sure Alien will come into the room a hundred times while I'm watching the game to tell me to shush because I'm scaring the "babies".

Kitties Kitties ...

So we knew Ros Kitty was pregnant. We just hadn't calculated *how* pregnant that's all. We have two new baby kitties, barely an hour old. Born, of all places, in Alien's closet. We have no idea if there's more coming or not, but based on the fact Momma is still walking around meowing up a storm I have to assume there's at least one left to be born. Then again, knowing Ros she may have been telling us to come check out the latest litter.

I'm so adopting not only all these new kitties out, but the Kitten Factory is outta here in six weeks, too. The other two cats, Ros' first litter, are now old enough that they're gonna be fixed as soon as the vet has their next "low income" day.

I'm sure pictures will follow in the up-coming days, once the kittens are out and about.

What's funny is one of the kittens has already been adopted out, Bubba's girlfriend wants one soooooo bad and has been just waiting for this litter to be born, LOL. I just need to adopt out Momma and the remaining kitten(s).

Anyone want a kitten? LOL!

Ros Kitty (a.k.a. the Kitten Factory) chilling with Alien just about an hour before the kittens were born. Shoulda known then that something was up. The only time Ros comes into my room is when she's in need of something - like comfort in this case. LOL!

Compounds in Cocoa Could Help Ward Off Heart Complications, Study Shows

By Kelli Miller Stacy
WebMD Health News
Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD

May 27, 2008 -- A cup of hot cocoa may seem like a no-no for people with diabetes, but the beverage may actually serve up a healthy dose of prevention and ward off heart disease, the leading cause of diabetes-related death.

New research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology provides substantial evidence that compounds in cocoa called flavonols improve the function and overall health of blood vessels. Unhealthy blood vessels are a leading cause of cardiovascular complications in people with diabetes.

Flavonols are naturally occurring plant compounds found in chocolate, red wine, and certain fruits and vegetables. A growing body of evidence suggests that cocoa flavonols have circulatory health benefits.

For the study, Malte Kelm, MD, a professor and chairman of cardiology, pulmonology and vascular medicine at the University Hospital Aachen and the Technical University Aachen, in Aachen, Germany, and colleagues examined the effect of a specially made flavonol-rich cocoa on patients with stable, treated type 2 diabetes.

The study participants randomly received cocoa containing either 25 milligrams or 321 milligrams of flavonol per serving. They drank the cocoa three times a day for 30 days. Researchers calculated each patient's blood vessel function before and after cocoa consumption at the start of the study and on days 8 and 30, using a combination of ultrasound images and blood pressure measurements.

Patients who drank the high-flavonol cocoa for one month had their blood vessel function improve from severely impaired to normal. Drinking the low-dose flavanol cocoa did not result in any significant changes in blood vessel function.

Researchers caution that the high-dose flavonol cocoa used in their study greatly exceeds the typical U.S. dietary intake of 20 to 100 milligrams daily, and you can't buy the extra-strength version in stores. Rather, they are optimistic that flavonol-containing diets offer an innovative approach to preventing heart disease.

"This research focuses on what's at the true heart of the discussion on 'healthy chocolate' -- it's about cocoa flavonols, the naturally occurring compounds in cocoa," Kelm writes. "While more research is needed, our results demonstrate that dietary flavonols might have an important impact as part of a healthy diet in the prevention of cardiovascular complications in diabetic patients."

In an accompanying editorial, Umberto Campia, MD, calls the study "important and thought-provoking," adding that "this is the foundation we need for doing a much larger prospective study that looks at the effect of cocoa flavonols not just on endothelial function, but also on the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious forms of cardiovascular disease."

Ten Thoughts Tuesday

1) OMG!! What a hockey game last night! Three overtime periods. A let down that the Penguins scored the winning goal. But it was a hell of a game anyway.

2) Married Son brought the "crew" with him yesterday to mow the lawn. His brother-in-law and a friend. Son text messaged me with a warning that the friend was heavily tattoed and pierced ... what he should have warned me about was the friend was wearing a kilt. Or was it a dress?? Is it a kilt *if* a Puerto Rican kid is wearing it? Although the piercings were a little extensive, too. Hard to keep a straight face when talking to a kid that has gauged ears (coulda put a silver dollar in those ear-holes they were so huge), and a spear in his nose.

3) So the lawn finally got mowed! Yippee! The tractor he brought with him died just as they were finishing up. What timing. Now that the lawn's been tamed I can have the lawn-guy come out and do it. He had refused because it had grown too long.

4) See ... this is how long the grass was ...

And you thought I was kidding when I said it was long enough to lose Grandson in!!

5) I really haven't been online lately. Been trying to catch up with ya'll ... darn near impossible. Ya'll been busy blogging!!

6) I still haven't figured out what I'm going to do about the car situation now. I will be taking over Single Son's van as soon as he gets a new car. I can't sell my car because I'll never break even with just the recent repairs on it. Four grand has been sunk into it in the last year, but there's no way I could get more than about a grand for it. Can't junk it, it'd be throwing all that money away if I did. Thought about selling the van, but won't make a dime on it either - yet to replace the car when it finally dies will cost me twice as much as I'd make on the van. Can't have Alien drive it either ... the insurance would kill me!! Besides, thanks to Bubba she owns a car anyway - and he's paying dearly for the insurance, hehehehe. Thought about giving it to Married Son so DIL would have a car - but he'd only turn around and junk it!

7) Alien wants to go with Tiger and me to my Class Reunion in July. Her excuse is if there's any little kids there she can watch them while the adults reminisce about the old days. Riiiiiiiiiiight, I can see that!! NOT!! Don't want to scare any of my classmates who have young kids with the Alien. I could see her mouth just running wild. That girl ain't shy!! Scary thing is her humor is exactly the same as mine was at her age.

Wow ... seven thoughts. This is getting harder ...

8) I read in Penguin's blog that she's getting back into beading. I really need to get off my behind and get back to it, too. I've got about a dozen unfinished beading projects just waiting for me to finish. Mostly diabetic alert bracelets. I got side tracked when I had to tear a few of them apart to add a "U" shaped wire-guard to keep them from breaking. I ran out of the wire guards and just never went back to the bead store for more. Maybe I'll do that this weekend when Alien's at her dad's house. Otherwise, shopping with her, even in the bead store is just too expensive. LOL!

9) Single Son and his GF have been on a cleaning spree. It's great! However, the messes made in the process are nuts. I'm really not complaining, though. At least someone is doing the heavy duty stuff that I can't do anymore.

10) I haven't used my dishwasher in about a year now. It's just easier for me to wash the few dishes we use a day by hand. I decided the other day to clean the dishwasher out and start using it again. Imagine my surprise when I opened it and there were half a dozen dishes in there! Do you know that dishes left in a dishwasher for a year will get moldy? YUCK!! And how did I not notice some of my dishes were missing? LOL. Easy. We have three sets of dishes we use on a daily basis. They aren't sorted in the cupboard, they're just stacked in any ol' way according to type of dish or bowl, but not by pattern. It was easy to overlook a few of them missing.

Ya'll have a great day. I'll be trying to catch up with ya'll today.

Gross Grub - Frog Eye Salad

Description:
Recipe source unknown.

Ingredients:
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 3/4 cups pineapple juice
2 egg -- beaten
1 tablespoon lemon juice
3 quarts water
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon cooking oil
1 package Acini de Pepe (A type of pasta)
3 cans mandarin oranges -- (11 ounce each) drained
2 cans crushed pineapple -- (20 ounce each) drained
1 carton Cool Whip -- (12 ounce)

Directions:
Combine sugar, flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt. Gradually stir in pineapple juice and eggs. Cook over moderate heat, stirring until thickened. Add lemon juice. Cool mixture to room temperature. Bring water, 2 teaspoons salt, and oil to boil. Add Acini de Pepe. Cook at a rolling boil until Acini de Pepe is done. Drain and rinse with water, drain again and cool to room temperature. Combine egg mixture and Acini de Pepe, mix lightly but thoroughly. Refrigerate over night, in an air tight container. Add remaining ingredients, mix lightly, but thoroughly. (I use a huge Tupperware bowl with a lid) Chill. Salad may be refrigerated as long as a week in air tight container.

Variation- Add red (or green) food coloring to pasta as it cooks. May add a package of colored marshmallows. Marshmallows makes this a good pot luck recipe as it makes a big portion.
