(hopefully for good things and not court cases....lol). Anyway, as usual, post your blogs to your own site, linking back to this one, and place a link to your blog below. Happy FIVING!

1) Gordie Howe. Mr Hockey. Growing up in hockey arenas where my brothers both played, he's a natural choice as my #1 Favorite Sports Figure. In the 70s he hosted many hockey workshops and played in many an "Old-Timers" games. What a pleasure it was to see this great man on the ice with pint sized hockey players in an Old-Timer's vs. "Kids" game.2) Steve Yzerman. Played for the Detroit Red Wings for his entire professional hockey career.
3) Vlad Konstantinow. Detroit Red Wings. Perminently disabled in a limo accident after Detroit won the Stanley Cup in 1997. He's still a much loved part of Red Wing hockey.
4) While not a professional sports figure by any stretch, I cannot go without remembering my brother, Richard. He started playing hockey at the young age of six. He played football for his High School team, baseball, BMX racing and was an avid body builder. His untimely death at the age of 25 was a shock to all who knew and loved him. Fifteen years later he's still remembered for his athletic abilities.
5) Not a specific person, but all the men and women that volunteer their time, resources and knowledge to youth sports programs. Without them many children would never have the opportunity to participate in sports - or become our sports heroes of tomorrow.
You must be a Redwings fan... Ugh! :) Yzerman was a great player, so was Vlad the Impaler. Very nice list.

Great list! I don't really follow hockey, but I went to a live game once and it was a LOT of fun!
ReplyDeleteThree of the best hockey player ever and witout volunteers kids would never learn sports
ReplyDeleteThe volunteers are a great idea. Also the ball boys and girls at the tennis courts but I suppose they learn a lot and probably consider it a priviledge.

I hadn't heard of the first three but loved the last two.
ReplyDelete1. Al Kaline - Mr Tiger...never played a game in the minor leagues and spent his entire career with the same team...Detroit Tigers.
ReplyDelete2. Gordie Howe - Mr Hockey.
3. Tiger Woods - Golfing Superstar - without a doubt the most popular star athlete of this generation.
4. Kareem Abdul Jabbar (Lew Alcindor) - Probably the greatest center to ever play the game of basketball.
5. Walter Payton - Running back of the Chicago Bears. Retired as the NFLs all time leading rusher for a career. Volunteered time for cancer research and youth sports programs in the Chicago area.
Great choices. I think you can tell I'm a hockey fan. ;^) Have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteWould have no clue who to put...have heard of some mentioned above by lightkeeper but I dont have anyone as a favorite! Most of the sports people I know/like were on Dancing With the Stars and that's how I got to "know" them....LOL Emmitt Smith, Apollo, Helio whoever I cant spell his last name, Jason Thomas.....hubby follows Nascar so probably would add Kasey Kahne and Tony Stewart to my list.
ReplyDeleteI join you in being happy about those unknowns that just play a good game (whatever it might be) and do good as they are able. But i hate to admit it, but I didnt know a single person named...but that is to be expected since sports is NOT on my top list. Come see, if you like, how totally out of it I am on this particular theme..LOL

I think #5 is neglected a lot. I grew up with 3 older brothers who were in all sports , especially hockey and football and I saw many coaches give so much time to their teams.
